Paris Salon

A fascinating programme of Parisian music from the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. The famous salons of the French capital were a hive of social, political and artistic discussion – meetings of minds seeing numerous first performances of works from the finest composers of the day. Music by Poulenc, Fauré and Cécile Chaminade. To include:

Women in Art

A celebration of music by female composers, with works ranging from the first half of the Nineteenth Century to the present day. American composer Lori Laitman’s setting of Orlando Gibbons’ famous The Silver Swan, sits alongside songs by Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann, while André Previn’s luscious Two Remembrances for voice, alto flute and piano are based on the tender words of German poetesses Frau Ava and Else Lasker-Schüller. To include:

Trios for Flute, Soprano and Piano

An exciting voyage of discovery through the repertoire of music for flute, soprano and piano. Trio songs by Massenet, Saint-Saëns and Amy Beach are programmed next to works from the Baroque period, including Handel’s fleet-footed German Arias. To include:

The Flute of Pan

When the God of Wind, Pan, pursued the beautiful Syrinx, whom he loved and idolized, she escaped his clutches by turning herself into long reeds at a river bank. Incensed, Pan lashed at the grasses with his sword, cutting Syrinx into his famous pipes. In this programme, we explore the different ways in which composers have been inspired by the story of Pan. Piano and flute solos by Claude Debussy sit next to duos by Mouquet and Roussel, and Marx’s grand and imaginative Pan trio.

This concert is an entirely American affair, with flute-piano and voice-piano duos by Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland, as well as a number of attractive works for trio by Bernstein, Previn and international chamber music impresario Charles Wandsworth. Settings of Irish folksongs by John Corigliano provide a rare and beautiful opportunity for flautist and soprano to perform alone. To include:
